Common toxic and harmful gases in farms
Ammonia (NH3): In livestock and poultry houses, ammonia mainly comes from a variety of nitrogenous compounds, mainly produced by bacteria and enzymes decomposing faeces, urine, bedding and feed residues.
Ammonia is strongly volatile and irritates the eyes and mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract. Thiols: Thiols are a group of organic compounds that are structurally similar to alcohols and have an extremely strong odour. The lower alcohols have a strong and unpleasant odour, and the odour of ethanethiol is particularly pronounced.
Thiols act primarily on the central nervous system. Inhalation of vapour at low concentrations can cause headache and nausea, and high concentrations can cause respiratory paralysis and death. Vomiting, diarrhoea, protein, tubular and haematuria in the urine may occur in poisoned persons.
Faecal odour: Faecal odour, also known as methyl indole, has a strong odour and is produced by microbial fermentation of undigested tryptophan in feed.
Faecal odourant can cause acute pulmonary oedema and emphysema in cattle and sheep, etc., bringing great losses to farming.
